What Lantern is
Keeplight Lantern is a browser extension that records the steps of a task you do on the web, so Keeplight can see where your team's time goes and what is worth automating. You decide when it records and what you share. Keeplight is run by Bryce Walls in Orange County, California. Questions go to bryce@keeplight.ai.
At a glance
Recordings
The steps of a task, a screenshot of each step and, if you turn it on, your voice.
Why: to see how the work is done today. Kept: 90 days on your computer; 90 days after your company's audit once shared.
Your answers
How often you do the task, how long it takes, who else does it and what's slow.
Why: to size the time it takes. Kept: with the recording.
Your account
Your work email, name and company membership.
Why: so recordings reach your company. Kept: while your company works with Keeplight.
We don't sell this information or share it for advertising. The text of the steps and your answers, without your name, email, screenshots or voice, are read by an AI assistant (Claude, by Anthropic) for a first read on whether the task could be automated.
When it records
Only between the moment you press record and the moment you press stop. While it's on, a REC badge shows on the Lantern icon and a bar shows on the page. Pausing stops everything, including the microphone.
What it records
- What kind of action each step was, such as a click or a page change
- A short description built from the name of the button, link or field you used
- The option you pick in a dropdown list, radio button, checkbox or menu, using its visible label, for example "Pick California from State"
- The page address (without anything after a ? or #), the site name and the page title
- The time, and a screenshot of the visible tab
- If you turn on Narrate, your voice from the microphone while recording is on
- Your optional answers on the review page
What it doesn't record
- What you type. Lantern notes only which field you used and paints over text in fields in screenshots.
- Passwords. Password fields are always painted over.
- Anything while you aren't recording, or on sites you switch off in Settings.
One thing to know: options you pick are named by their visible labels. Personal details in those labels, like emails or names next to profile photos, are blurred the same way as the rest of the step, and an option that repeats something you typed is left out. If a list holds personal choices anyway, skip that part or switch Lantern off for the site.
Automatic redaction
With Auto-redact on (the default), Lantern blurs email addresses, card numbers, US Social Security numbers, phone numbers, street addresses, IP addresses and access keys in screenshots, and replaces them with a label in the step text, address and title. With Hide people on (the default), it blurs profile pictures, the names beside them and @usernames. You can add your own words to hide, and black out any part of a screenshot by hand. Redaction can't read text inside images, videos or drawings, so check your screenshots before you share.
Where it's stored
On your computer, inside your browser, until you choose to send it. Lantern sends nothing on its own and has no analytics or tracking.
Connecting to your company
To send recordings, you connect Lantern to Keeplight once. You sign in at app.keeplight.ai with your work email or Google account, and that page hands Lantern your name, work email and a sign-in key for your account only (a Firebase refresh token), which Lantern keeps in your browser. Then you enter the company code your team lead gave you. That creates a membership record with your email, name and the code. If your email matches your company's domain, you're in right away; otherwise your team lead or Keeplight approves you first.
Sending a recording
Nothing leaves your computer until you press Send on a recording's review page. Then Lantern uploads that one recording to Keeplight's storage at Google Firebase: its steps, screenshots, narration if any, your answers, its title and times, and your name and email. You can also export a recording as a file instead.
Keeplight uses recordings only to understand your team's workflows and recommend what to automate. To get there faster, each recording you send gets a first read from an AI assistant: Claude, made by Anthropic. It sees only the step descriptions (for example "Click Export report"), the sites used, how long the recording took and your answers. It never sees your name, email, screenshots, narration or the page addresses. Its first read says whether the task looks worth automating and why; Keeplight reviews every one before it counts, and your team lead may see it on the recording.
Who processes it for us
Google Firebase stores sent recordings (Firestore for the steps and answers, Cloud Storage for screenshots and narration) and handles sign-in, as our service provider. Anthropic processes the step text and answers for the first read, as our service provider under its commercial terms. The first read runs through a workflow tool (n8n) that Keeplight hosts itself. Nothing else receives your recordings.
Who sees what you send
You, Keeplight, and the team leads on your company's Keeplight account. Nobody else at your company can see it in Keeplight. Your company brought Keeplight in, and we handle your recordings on its behalf as its service provider.
How long it's kept
- On your computer: Lantern deletes recordings, including narration, after 90 days. You can delete any step or recording sooner.
- Sent to Keeplight: deleted 90 days after your company's audit is delivered.
- Your membership: kept while your company works with Keeplight. Signing out of Lantern removes the sign-in key from your browser.
Permissions Lantern asks for
- Read and change data on all websites: to see which button you clicked and take the step's screenshot on whatever site your task uses. It only does this while recording.
- Scripting: to add the recording bar and redaction to the tab you're recording.
- Storage and unlimited storage: to keep recordings and screenshots on your computer.
- Alarms: to check once a day for recordings older than 90 days and delete them.
- Offscreen document and microphone: only for Narrate, and only if you allow the microphone.
Your choices and rights
You can turn off Narrate, Auto-redact or Hide people, switch off any site, delete any recording on your computer, or uninstall Lantern, which removes everything it stored. For recordings you sent, email bryce@keeplight.ai to see, correct or delete them. We'll confirm within 10 business days and answer within 45 days, and we'll never treat you differently for asking. If you're a California resident, these are also your rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act. Your company may also be asked, since it decides how Keeplight is used.
Limited use
Lantern's use of information follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We don't sell it, use it for advertising, or use it for anything other than the workflow review described here.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the effective date and tell you in the extension before anything new is collected.
